Letting Go, Trusting God
Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the LORD. Jeremiah 17:7
Standing on a rock next to the slowly flowing creek, I adjust my line to get ready to cast next to a boulder in the water. Years of experience has taught me where the big trout is hanging out. Today I am determined to catch a decent sized one. By Golly! I've paid a fair amount for an out-of-state license and I'm sure as heck going to have fish for dinner!
The problem is that the sun is so bright that the glistening water doesn't allow me to see the trout following my line. I've got to put on my polarized glasses so I can see the trout approach and set the hook with precision. There's only one problem. I begin to rely on my sight to time when to set the hook. I don't trust my own instincts and the feel fo the line under my fingertips.
Fishing is a lot like faith. Sometimes you just have to trust what you can't see. When I take off my polarized sunglasses and relax into the scene, I find myself going deep within. Everything is in true color; no more filters. I am able to let go of the desire to control everything. It is when I reach this moment of peace that I can react quickly and efficiently when the fish strikes. "It's a keeper!" I say a quick prayer to thank God for its life. If it's a little one I laugh with pure joy as I feel the vigor of its struggle to survive on the end of my line. In a moment or two I have gently set it free. In letting go, I find more joy. In acceptance, I find peace.
Reflect: In what arena of your life are you struggling to let go and trust God today? Is it family, friendship, intimate relationships, finances, future plans, accepting yourself, faith?
Write a list and pray: Jesus I trust in you.
